Unexpected 0 Day at Lake City

Day 43

Date: 13.06.2022

CDT Mile: Mile 961.2

Miles hiked: 0 miles / 0 km

Camping at: Lake City campground

The group woke me up for bf this morning around 9am. It got quite late last night and I could just have slept on. We planned to hike out today again. As we have to climb up to a mesa first thing, our plan was just to hike 3 to 5 miles, and get the first 1'400 foot climb behind us. However, we have a couple of chores to do first. I want to send my ice axe back to REI and some other gear I don't use anymore I will bounce ahead. It took me more than an hour to get things done at the post office. Everything takes a lot of time, specially as we have no car to move around. At the ice cream store we get offered a ride back to the trailhead. Till we are all ready it is 4pm, as the K2's also had to do laundry and such today. Reaching the parking lot the wind is heavy blowing and smoke is covering the sky. There is another new wildfire in Flagstaff, far away, but the wind brings all the smoke here. It might be not a good idea climbing up today to a big wide and open mesa. The wind and smoke will be worse up there. So we decided to camp at the parking lot and start hiking early tomorrow morning.
