I slept quite good, despite being on the floor and sleeping with 6 people in that tiny hut. We got up at 5.15 am and were out on trail shortly before 6am. That's a real early start, but we are motivated to get food today! And just a few feet out, we ran into 2 huge moose! The weather is foggy and a little rainy, perfect hiking weather. I put on my rain gear and off we go. It's a 1'000 feet uphill hike to start with, but so gentle, I just fly up the hill. That are uphills I love, leaving the guys behind! It's 10.5 miles to Monarch Pass and I am there by 9.20am. That's an average of 3 miles per hour (5.6 kmh). It is sunday today and monarch pass is a popular place for outdoor sport activities, specially biking. The last few miles one biker after the other crossed my way. A little annoying for us hikers, as we always have to stop and get off trail to let them pass.
Food up in monarch pass is not the best, but I get a bf sandwich with egg, sausage patty and cheese, yummy, all prepared in the microwave🤣 and for a hungry hiker everything is simply delicious! From Monarch Pass you can hitch to Salida, apparently one of the best towns in Colorado. We have booked a whitewater rafting on Monday and hence will have some time and rest from hiking. However, there is a festival going on today and all hotels are either fully booked or suuuuper expensive. But there is a donation based hostel close to Monarch Pass for CDT and CT's hikers which is awesome! It's a cute house with showers, shampoo, conditioner, soap, loaner clothes (I got the best ones🤣🙈), washer, dryer, grill, kitchen etc. It is amazing! And the manager even drives us to Salida's Walmart were we shop dinner for tonight. I never thought I go shopping in the clothes I currently wear but it was very funny actually🤣 also Thew Piper and Dustman, Mountain Goat and Jules are here too. We cook hamburger and salad, have beers and margarita's and enjoy the evening.
