Grants!

Day 26

Date: 19.05.2022

CDT Mile: Mile 461.8

Miles hiked: 15 Miles / 24 km

While Patches and PlusOne decided to hitch into Grants and ditch the 15 miles road walk along the highway, Dogbite and I got up very early and left the ranger station at 6am. PlusOne offered to take some of my gear, and my pack is so light now, I wish it would be like that all days! We hike very fast, enjoying the lower temperatures and the cold road in the early morning. Hiking fast is good, the miles are flying by and with a light pack and an easy terrain it is very well doable. But it does also stimulate your belly faster and it's not so nice if you can't hold it back and have to dig a hole right next to the highway🙈! Felling even lighter we power hike on🤣 At 9.30am we'd already hiked nearly 10 miles and stopped at Subway to get our breakfast at the highway intersection. I love subway and looked forward to a sandwhich since 2 days! However, I thought we would make it there maybe by lunch time and did not expect us to be that fast! We are the first hikers, but a little later other hikers roll in too, when we get ready to hike the last 5 miles of today. The last couple of miles of a day are normally the most mental once. It could be only one mile to the campsite, or a couple of miles along a road, but they seem never ending! So does this. Just 1.5 miles before reaching Grants I need a break. We were walking very fast, nearly running, so far with a high speed of 4.4 miles per hour (+7kmh) on a slight uphill. But hiking fast has one more downside, it wears down your feet much faster. Still, we are in town before lunch, 15 miles down! And that's it for the rest of the day for me too! Now all I do for the rest of the day is relaxing, washing clothes, showering (it has been a while again!), filling our belly's at the chinese buffet across the street, some drinks in the evening and enjoy a god night in a hotel bed!😁
