Dry, hot day

Day 18

Date: 10.05.2022

CDT Mile: Mile 333.9

Miles hiked: 22.5 Miles / 36 km

It's a 10 miles hike on a dirt road before we finally reconnect with the official CDT trail again and finally complete the Gila River alternate. And only thanks to the Forest Service there is water in 10 miles, otherwise it would have been a 24 miles hike without water! And just when we start with our hike the forest service passes us in a car and informs us about this water cache. Even so we have an app showing us the trail and the water sources, and we can leave comments for other hikers behind us, we were not sure if this water cache is still applicable. The last comment stated that there is hardly any water left. The relief is big, when we really know, that there is enough water for us. It would have been a very heavy carry!

At the water cache we stop for lunch and a nap before we hit the CDT trail again. It leads us trough National Forest, partly burned, up and down over the hills with some great views. I feel the difference of the trail between the PCT and the CDT. While the PCT never goes up that steep (never above 20% steepness), the trail of the CDT mostly just goes up straight the hills without many turns. But it is still beautiful. We have pine trees again and I hike the following miles quite easily, enjoying some alone time. Tiempo and Chairman are ahead, everyone else is behind me. We reach another beautiful water source (ironic!), this time a pond for the cattle (with a mild taste of cow after filtering!), where we fill up our bottles for the last few miles and the next morning. When the rest caught up, we decided to hike 5 more miles. Tiempo, Chairman and me hike ahead, sadly the others of the group decided to camp 2 miles behind us. So it's only the 3 of us for tonight.
