Colorado!

Date: 28.05.2022

Our off-trail days come to an end. Today we got up very early to catch the train at

6.30 am from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. There, we changed to a Bus to Espanola, where we had to change the Bus again to Chama. The whole trip took like 6 hrs and costed USD 2.25! The buses are for free, amazing!

Chama is a beautiful little town and even if still in New Mexico, it's totally different. There are hills around and grass! We haven't seen green grass for about 4 weeks! Most houses are build out of block wood and I love it here as of second one. It's a small town and easy to get around walking. Chama is also the western terminus of the Chumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, a steam-driven, narrow gauge heritage railway. From Chama we will try to get a hitch to Cumbres Pass at 3'055 m tomorrow, an about half an hour drive to the CDT trail head.

We planned to have a nice relaxing day, preparing for hiking out again tomorrow. However, somehow I ended up in a bar, while the group had to pick up boxes at the post office and went for lunch (well the bar apparently has the best Wifi in town and I wanted to check in with family and friends).

So we can all imagine how this story ended. I just ordered a second Margarita, talking to an other hiker, when my group joined. Well, a couple of Margarita's, other drinks and shots with local's and american tourist's - even being invited to a wedding the next day - , K2 brought us back to the campground around 8pm with 3 pizzas in his hands. That was a good move🤣. It was a very funny, great and totally unexpected evening though!
