After spending a wonderful night with our trailangels we left to get a big yummy Breakfast in town. Big dark clouds covered the sky, looks like it's gonna rain soon. Also, we had to resupply for the next stretch in the city market. It always takes much longer to resupply than I wish it would. I have to check the selection and I never really know what I should buy for lunch. Lunch is the hardest for me to get. This time I get brioche buns, cream cheese and smoked salmon and I am already looking forward to eat lunch😋 in the City Market you can profit from discount prices if you have the grocery member card. As I don't have one, I simply ask the lady next to me if I could scan hers😁 and I save 12 bucks! She is a very friendly women who has been skiing in Switzerland several times before and is very interested in what we are doing. While Ducky, Vista and SwissChris left 10 minutes ago, Boss and me are sitting outside the store, repacking our groceries into Zip lock bags (we always say that thru hikers have a master in zip lock management, as mostly all of our gear and food is packed in various bags!🤣). The women I borrowed the member card from returns and offers us a drive back to the trailhead. How amazing is that! She leaves for a minute and when she returns she even offers us to stay at her place in Copper Mountain for the night, do laundry, shower and get freshly homemade cooked food (she called her husband and he is fine with that). If we wouldn't just have stayed at the trailangel place from Karen and Kevin, we would have definitely taken that offer. But we want to get back on trail and take the offer of the hitch back to the trailhead. The friendliness, openness and flexibility of people here is simply amazing!
That was a successful morning with taking it easy, eat breakfast, resupplying and being back on trail before 11am already! It was raining heavily when we reached the trailhead. Oh no, not my favorite! We wanted to get as far as possible, but it is quite a lot of climbing ahead of us and no water for 12 miles. So 12 miles is the minimum goal to hike, 18 miles would be amazing. The uphill climbs however are gradually and nice, what's not so nice is that it rained all day. But because of that, Ducky and me managed to hike the 18 miles, being totally done at the end of the day. It is not very pleasant to take breaks in the rain. Also, it got quite cold, and so we just hiked the 18 miles without any breaks really. We did break shortly to get water from the last water source for another 10 or 12 miles again and climbed up another hill in order to have less climbs tomorrow, which is gonna be a big day anyways already. Every mile and highmeter we manage to do today will make tomorrow a little easier. Boss and SwissChris camped 2.5 miles down at the bottom of the hill next to the river we got water from and it turned out that Vista camped only 0.2 miles behind us! We pitched our tents in the rain, took all our dripping rain gear into the tent and stayed in there all night. It did rain during the night a couple of times, but luckily stopped in the early morning.
Today we have seen many CT hikers and some day hikers out of Breckenridge but already tomorrow the CDT will not follow the CT any longer. I really enjoyed our hike on the CT and wonder how the trail will look like once leaving the wonderfully maintained Colorado Trail again.
