Burro Mountain Homestead
Day 9
Date: 02.05.2022
CDT Mile: Mile 121.2
Miles hiked: 13.9 Miles \ 26.4 km
We got up as usual this morning. Our goal is to reach the Burro Mountain Homestead in about 14 miles shortly after lunch, so before the heat kicks in. 2 miles in there is another beautiful cattle through (just kiddin') where we can fill up our water bottles, as there is no water till we reach the camp at the Burro Mountain. Pack is filled with 4.5 Liters again and today we have our first climb of about 700 meters. But it's a beautiful trail and a nice breeze and it will be good to get in shape as the trail so far has been very flat. Also we reach the forest again. However, I am also happy to reach the top. I can feel my energy level dropped down and I urgently need to refill it! The last few steps were hard 🙃 The views down to the desert however are beautiful. Also I met a rabbit, a big gray squirrel and a horny toad on my trail up. We stop for lunch where Farmhouse (another hiker) catches up. Together we hike the steep trail down to the Burro Mountain Homestead. Some other hikers are here and when Stumble Bee (hiker women from the Netherlands) she starts to dance and run towards us😁 we buy ice cream and frozen pizza, shower, wash our clothes, fix my broken inflatable sleeping pad and just relax and enjoy😄. It was a wonderful afternoon and we decided to stay there for the night. Also we have been informed that some section of the CDT trail from Burro Mountain Homestead to Silvercity is closed due to some fire activity. But there is a shorter alternate, which I do like a lot. It's a 7 miles hike along a dirt road, then a 12 miles road walk into Silvercity. Also on the CDT trail we had to hike 13 miles on a road, but with this alternate we can shorten the way to Silvercity may be by 20 miles - and get to town the next day already! Sounds awesome, let's do it! We enjoy the evening together till it's dark and too cool to sit outside.
