Day 103: Nearo Day @ Burney Mountain Guest Ranch
Date 19.07.2018Miles hiked today: 2 miles Total Mileage: Mile 1'412.0 I slept in as long is I possibly could! Some hikers got up early to hit the trail so I was awake earlier but napped on. Shortly after 8am it became too hot to stay in the tent, the sun heated up my tent for more than 2 hours already, so I had to move out. But it was nice to sleep in. Breakfast was being served. Fresh scrambled eggs, homemade biscuits and gravy. Really delicious, one of the best breakfasts I've had so far. We stuffed our bellies! The rest of the morning I'm being lazy, organising things, taking care of my blisters, washing my clothes etc. Duchess and Parmesan inform me that they are on its way to Burney town and I hope to meet up soon again!
It's so hot outside I try to move as little as possible and stay in the air conditioned saloon! Apparently it's not usually that hot but we are in the middle of a heat wave. Yesterday, when I hiked along the rim with no shade, was one of the hottest days! Perfect timing, no wonder I nearly died! My shirt was never wet, because my sweat was being dried by the sun immediately, that's how hot it was! I don't know how we did it as I can't imagine hiking in that heat today! Shortly before lunch out hiker friends Sausage and Blue Man make it here too. We plan to go back on trail somewhen today, but at the moment there is no way we start hiking. Even to go the toilets, which are located outside, is a struggle and you return sweaty, it's about 40 degrees Celsius outside! My tent is still standing in the middle of the sun and I'm worried if my sleeping bag could start burning because it's cooking hot in there! I just grab my sleeping bag and hang it up in the shade, making sure to be back in the cool saloon as soon as possible! I wish I had a room where I could nap for a little while. As it is still too hot to move later in the afternoon we decide to eat dinner here too and try to hike out after. Dinner is homemade and very delicious burritos and again we stuff ourselves. Around 7pm, it's still about 35 degrees Celsius, we get ready to hit the trail. Dirty Money is feeling bad, she has eaten too much and can't even close her hip belt! After hiking 1 mile and reaching the main road to hitch to Burney town we run into Parmesan and Duchess who just got a ride back. Amazing, we couldnt have timed it any better but in fact we did not plan anything! We hiked 1 more mile, where we found a big flat spot next to the trail suitable for all of our tents. So that's it for today, we hiked 2 miles and call it a day. I love it :) tomorrow morning we will visit the Burney falls and my mum has send me a box there (they are currently in America too, travelling around with the car and visit national parks for 1 month. But I'm not gonna meet them, I'm too far up north already. However, she brought some chocolate from home and I'm all excited about it!).
