Day 93: ⛺ @ mile 1'179.3 - ⛺@ mile 1'198.7
Date: 09.07.2018 Miles hiked today: 19.5 miles / 31.38km Total mileage: 1'198.7 I didn't sleep well tonight because my tent spot was kind of uneven to one side so I kept slipping off my sleeping pad. I put some cloth below the sleeping pat to even it out which helped a little. My alarm rang at 5am and I heard some other hikers getting ready. That motivated me to get up too, otherwise I would have stayed in my tent for a little longer. So I did hit the trail by 5:45 am already. It's so nice hiking in the morning as not that many people are up then. You feel like the only one, the whole trail just for yourself and everything is so peaceful. Shortly after I started hiking I run into a deer and that made my morning. I haven't seen a deer for a while so I watched him for a a minute or two before I continued hiking. It's 16.1 miles on the PCT and 1.4 miles off PCT to Sierra City and im looking forward to get there soon. It's mostly downhill today with only one or two very moderate uphills. I challenge myself to be there before lunch time. I figure out I can do 3 miles or even a little more an hour. It should take me around 5 to 5.5 hours then. I keep pushing. The trail is mostly very nice ground, only for a few small streches it's gravel again but I keep hiking at a very fast pace and finally reach town around 11am with a breakfast break. So I did the 16.2 miles in 4 hours and 44 minutes, that's pretty strong and im very proud of myself:) I spoiled myself with a burger, onion rings and a milkshake of which I could only eat half all. They have wifi here and I hoped to upload some more blogs but sadly it's not a very good WiFi and i can't even open my blog manager. I'm sorry but I hopefully can upload some more in Chester (150 miles from here) where I should be able to get some WiFi! Sierra City is a very tiny place, filled with mostly hikers. It's a very hot day today and we all look for a shady place to hang around. Luckily they offer a free cold shower and free camping at the church. My plan actually was to stay here for the night. But hiking out from Sierra City you have to climb about 8 miles and 2'800 feet (850 meters) in elevation. There is a camping spot in about the middle of that climb. Also they say it's a very hot climb cause it's exposed. After taking the shower and washing my hair (coooold but yet very good and refreshing), and breaking for a couple of hours I decide to go back to the trail in the later afternoon when its less hot and hike to the camp spot. Then I've hiked nearly half of the uphill hike in the cooler evening and can to the other half in the cool morning. But I'm not ready yet! Around 5:30pm (time flies incredibly fast when you are breaking!) Another hiker's mum offers a lift back to the trail. Time for me to leave! I'm back on the trail hiking shortly before 6pm and reach the camp spot around 7:30pm. It's a very windy place cause it's like a saddle just little above the tree limit. But I found a nice spot which offers a little shelter. There are two more tents here too which makes me feel better - just in case the wind starts to pick up then at least I'm not alone. Let's hope this is not the case, fingers crossed!
The early hiker catches the deers ;)
Love the signs when they are grown in trees
Where should there be a town? Can't see anything but Sierra City must be down there somewhere!
