Day 36: Sawmill Camp - Hiker Town
Day: 13.05.2018 Miles hiked today: 20 miles Total Mileage: Mile 517.6
Juhui there was no fog when I opened my tent doors, but a beautiful sun rise through the trees. However, it was cold this morning and the wind didn't make it any better. But let's get up, in less than 2 miles we hit the 500 miles marker. On the way there we were thinking if a rhyme to the song "500 miles" and that's what we finally agreed upon:
And we would walk 500 miles
And we would walk 2000 more
Just to be that women who thru hiked the PCT
In 2018!
So proud of us, we continously hiked 500 miles of the PCT, not missing any mile of the trail!!! (A lot of hikers didn't do the detours or skip some mikes here and there). Nearly 1/4 of the trail accomplished and this also means that the sierras are not that far away anymore! Juhuui nearly done with the desert section. I am really ready for a change and to leave the desert and it's heat and waterless streches behind soon.
However, the fog was not gone far. Around the next bend and there it waited for us! But there is worse. The fog at least keeps the temperature moderate and makes hiking much easier. Once we reached the top of the hills and were now much closer to the desert the fog was gone too. The landscape was absolutely beautiful. This one strech is definitely one of my favourites so far on the trail. Green soft gras, many meadows and loads of flowers. It's weird standing up that hill/mountain where it is still chilli and all green and nice and looking down at the hot and dry Mojave desert which we soon shall cross. It's all downhill with some up and downs until we reach Hiker Town. I've heard many things about this weird place and not all if them were positive. It's a little place owned by a guy who rebuilt a town. You can rent one of the buildings for the night and stay e.g. at the sheriffs or at the school and so on. It's quite dirty there and for sure the rooms don't get cleaned. We got the honeymoon suite with one massive bed in there. If we lie vertically all 3 of us fit on it easily :). But for sure I will stay in my sleeping bag! But there are showers too which is amazing! Even if our clothes are still dirty and stinky it makes you feel fresh again. I love showering:)
As we need some more food for the next strech we have to resupply here. There is a little petrol shop not too far from here which has decent food and there is a little restaurant there too. The owner of hiker town offers his car to go shopping. So 8 of us hikers hopped in the car, one was driving. Sadly, the restaurant just for tonight- what a bummer!! We checked out the next closest restaurant but just when we turned on the engine of the car a women run to us. Where we are going?? If we didn't like the food in the petrol station? What's our problem?. We told her that the restaurant is closed and we are all very hungry. Therefore our plan is to drive to the next place, get some food and come back here later to resupply (It's open till 10pm so no hurry here). We heard that next to hiker town there is another place for hikers to stay. It's a little further away but they offer pick ups etc and seem to be cleaner. But as we want to get back on trail very early tomorrow morning we decided that hiker town will do. Anyway, there seems to be a big competition between these 2 places and the women forbid us to go and eat at the restaurant we just planned to go cause it belongs to 'the others'! What The heck is going on here??! So it ended that we had to drive 20 miles in the other direction to get some food and resupply rather than the 8 miles to 're others'. But the food was good though :) that's all that matters in a thru hikers life next to sleep and hike ;) (And believe me food is my favourite one out of the three!😂).
So we got back just before sun set when easy company passed by. He is looking for a place to sleep and it's very windy outside. Well, we have some floor left, but not sure if the bed holds 4 people! All easy company wants is a wind free spot so the floor is perfect, that's why he is called easy company! Good night ya all, alarm is set for 3:15am tonight! Less than 6 hours of resting left, better make sure to use this time!
