Day 1: Campo - Hauser Creek
08.04.2018
15.4 miles Hike
Mile 15.4
Today is our first real hiking day on the Trail. Our packs are fully packed - too heavy actually as we soon shall find out. My Pack was loaded with about ,+8kg of baseweight (everything without Food, Water and fuel), 8.5 liter of Water and about 8kg of Food. We did not have a scale so these are rough estimates but neither of us could put the backpack on on their own. Hilarious! 😂 however, we did always have enough Water and the best Food on Trail, making other hikers jealous.
We got up at 6:15 am and started Hiking around 7:20 am. Already on our first day we encountered the first rattle snake. Joanne who was taking the lead suddently screamed out. However she didnt realize than that what scared her off was a rattle snake. Only when i passed by and looked into the bushes i noticed a rattle snake starring at me (Face level)! I too screamed and Run off, trying to leave the snake behind me as soon and as far away as possible! We were both shaking after that Situation. Apparently our screams were heard by hikers behind us and warned them. We met some of them later in the day and they too met the snake and had to walk around it. Happy we pre-warned them with our screams :)
For the rest of our day we carefully watched all bushes around the Trail and run into a small garden snake which doesnt do any harm but still scared us off first. Otherwise we had a lovely day and finally arrived tired and with back and neck sore at Hauser Creek around 4 pm.
I wonder how I ever shall reach Canada?!?
